The history of meditation and where it began is uncertain, although researchers believe it may have derived with the primitive man discovering meditation and its altered states of consciousness while they sat staring at the flames of their fires. We do know however, that some of the earliest references to meditation are found in the Hindu scriptures. In the 5th century, meditation developed in China and Buddhist India. Hindu Buddha meditation is said to have begun when Buddha reached enlightenment by meditating under a Bodhi Tree around 500 BC. There are 2 styles of Chinese meditation; The Zen meditation which is a silent format and the Buddha meditation where you use your voice to chant.

In the last few years, meditation has grown in popularity using both the silent Zen meditation or the sound meditations of Buddha. Throughout the sessions, we will be practicing many styles which include the traditional as well as the older, traditional styles.

Meditation has many benefits and is a practice that gives balance physically, emotionally and mentally. Today, people use meditation to treat a wide range of situations such as anxiety, stress and depression. When you are able to silence the mind in meditation, it helps a person to remove stress and enables them to think clearly so they can make better decisions whereas a worried, negative mind, creates confusion and the ‘fight or flight’ reflex, where often the person becomes unwell mentally and physically.

While our ancestors needed this response in hunting situations, today it is not the case, yet it is the main reason for many of our everyday stresses.

During meditation, our blood flow is directed to the parasympathetic nervous system instead. This is the part of the brain that triggers relaxation, a slower pulse and energy conservation. Did you know that meditation has been successfully used to help people quit smoking, conquer drug and alcohol addictions, reduce blood pressure and reduce symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome and menopause? Well, it’s true.

Meditation aids in lowering the heart rate and your blood pressure by slowing down your breathing, which in turn reduces the amount of oxygen needed. Along with the mind, your muscles begin to gently relax. Almost like a ‘reset button’ for your body. Meditation is also being recognised by the medical profession as being beneficial for a patient’s well-being by aiding their recovery from an illness and we will soon see more recommendations as part of the healing process.
